Understocked / Overstocked

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think some people will ask the same question repeatedly, hoping to get the answer they want... when someone misguided tells them it's okay, they're off and running.

I've seen many of those, too...

(Does that mean I can have my Aro now??) :)

I used to struggle with proper stocking levels but acquiring more tanks I'm always shuffling fish around to maintain a visually appealing look and healthy tank. I would be getting close to over stocked now if I didn't have a rack of 20 gallon tanks gearing up for expansion.

That's not necessarily true. Some people do research on the internet, can't find exactly what they're looking for, or find someone that's already done want they *want* to do (but haven't because they're unsure), so they come here and post threads asking for help, or suggestions.

However, answers to threads such as those seem to be lacking responses - I expect because those that are here to supposedly "help" forget that not all of us have the same experience they do, nor do we have the time to search over 5000 threads for an answer. Instead, they think we're being irresponsible, lazy, or what have you, so we just move off, and try once again to find out own answers.

The threads that do get answers don't seem to have their actual questions answered, but instead get cookie cutter answers about water quality.

Don't get offended.. That's just my take, having tried to get information from a total of 3 boards.

I may know not to put an Aro in my 125 gallon tank, no matter how badly I want one, but I don't know what size oscar is good to put with a Dempsey, Firemouth, and Convict all 3" or smaller to allow for the least amount of fatality while growing in my tank....

Sorry if I've offended anyone.

Based purely on average cichlids aggression, I'd say to make sure the oscar
is a bit bigger then the Jd. Some people have good experiences with JD's some don't. Mine is about 5" now and he's a bit of a punk. My take is just to make sure your Oscar is big enough to not potentially get bullied. Just my .2 based on personal experience.

You haven't offended me, neither has Aquanero.

Aqua has missed my point and I don't feel like wasting any more energy trying to break it down to his level.

Whoa Pal, I get your point, I don't agree with it.

I'm not going to placate anyone. Now take it easy with the back handed remarks.

When I add a post to a thread concerning a question, I answer according to my own experience. I don't consider myself an expert by any means. I learn something new about fish keeping all the time, and not only from this site. Books, magazines, various websites, and trial and error are all great assets in this hobby. Post counts don't really equate to the level of education on aquarium matters. Proven advice and documented experiences are far greater. But that being said, many people will naturally gravitate to those on this site that they know, trust, or share an established a rapport. You really don't know what people are actually doing in their own homes. They could say they are doing 50% water changes or that they have a 400 gallon tank, but who really knows? People do what they want with the advice given. Some accept it while some totally ignore it for whatever reasons they have. I agree that sometimes established members can be short and condescending to new members. I don't think that kind of interaction is necessary. But then there are times when new members take any advice that may differ from their beliefs as being rude or mean when that is not the case at all. Bottom line, MFK is not the pinnacle of aquarium education. It is like all other great tools on the net, it requires some scrutiny, common-sense, and self-awareness. I don't believe that anyone should gather all of their education from one source. I say that with all respect. I love this site and it is my favorite site dedicated to the hobby but there are many other sources to gain knowledge about fish keeping. Letting comments or threads on this site discourage you from learning or advancing in this hobby should never be entertained.

I find 90% of the time the crappy looking tanks have like 1 or 2 cichlids in a 4 or 6 foot tank (The exception is a breeding pair.)

No one complains about discus tanks having so many in it....why?....because they look amazing.

My suggestion to anyone asking "is my tank over stocked?"....well check your water parameters and you will find your answer, not by asking some of these "experts".

Peace!

:D

:)

Ok, so let me get this straight...

You start off by calling peoples tanks crappy, then offer a suggestion that no one asked a question to and suggest the solution to the question no one asked is to simply "check your water parameters" without explaining what those parameters are or should be, before being condescending by quoting "experts", referring to those on here that offer help... all in a post prior to complaining about people not giving elaborate advice when they post answers to peoples questions? See the below quote?

No one said I was over stocked.

There have been a lot of questions lately asking can I put "X" fish or "X amount of fish into "X" size tank.

People reply like...1 single JD is fine in a 55 gallon, or no way should you keep 3 Oscars in a 90. Well if the person is asking, then they more then likely already have these fish in the tank, it isn't a proposal.

You know it is true.....so don't discourage these people...help them out with some of your knowledge and tell them if you are going to keep 3 Os in a 90 gallon, then these things are a must...water changes, good filtration, don't over feed, check water parameters, etc....

See?

Like I already stated, these people aren't making a proposal...they are already in the situation.

Not everyone has the $$ to upgrade and make their mistakes right and I don't agree that your giving best information....your giving your giving your opinion and what you personally would do because:

A...you had a bad experience (your GT jumping to his death, get lids yet?)

or

B...you heard someone else say it

:D

:)

Then, you ASSume that the member you were taking an unsolicited jab at about his GT, didnt have lids, right?

Then you feel like, with your superior grasp of grammar & the english language, extraordinary fish husbandry skills and vast knowledge of aquatics in general (all this judging from your previous threads over the past 3 months) that you can insult Aquanero, who, at least as of late, has posted more helpful answers than anyone on here and is always a very cordial guy willing to help with most anything?

Am I reading this correctly?

If so, maybe you ought to try not offending members and their tanks and just read what people write in response to your interpersonal conversations. I highly doubt anything youve typed was over anyones head and pretty sure everyone understands what you were saying to yourself in the original post.
