Yes it would. Do NOT use Under tank heaters on acrylic. They do have a warning on them for glass only.
You don't have to use acrylic or glass. Many people keep them in rubbermaid containters. (appropriate size of course). I *think* you can use heat TAPE on those, but not sure. Don't quote me on that. Any reason you don't want to use glass though? 10 gallons are the absolute perfect size for a single leo, and a 20 for 2.

Dude, In my house we had 3 kids and a dog. With FOUR glass tanks. Nothing happened. You'll be fine. Keep the tank out of the kids and dogs reach. Even within reach, I doubt anything would happen. Dogs couldn't care less, and the kids should know better. Unless you have a cat, youre fine.
no cat, the dog would take issue with that. The kids do know better, but one of them is special needs and may not remember. I'm just overly nervous about her. anyway I guess I'll stick with a ten and if I do make an enclosure (or box, enclosure sounds big) I'll use glass.
If one is special needs, you can place it out of reach or in a room he/she cant get into. Out of reach pretty much solves everything in your case. Anywhere the kids and dog cant get? Master bath/office/anywhere?
I also don't know whether you want a 'display' type setup or what. If you want to display, acrylic might be a reasonable choice. If not, we don't want you wasting your money! Anyway, about heat. You don't have to use heat pads or heat tape, although theres nothing wrong with it normally. You can also you ceramic heat emmiters, infrared, etc. Just no bright lights, geckos will stress out. Just whatever you do, make sure you have the proper temp gradient. Just a few degrees too hot can kill a gecko over the course of a few months.
