Unexpected Catch

Growing up on the mississippi i did a lot of fishing. Best time i ever had was gar fishing. We found this one spot where when the flow on the river was just right there would be hundreds of gar sitting at top of water waiting for food to float by.

What we used for bait. Rope! Took Nylon Rope and tied a loop in one end to attach to the fishing line. Other end we frayed it all the way to the knot. What this equals? One bad ass top water lure!! Cast it out and real in like any top water lure. When they grab it and do their roll stuff their teeth get caught. When you get it into boat, take one of those fishing tools (forget name) that holds mouth open and use a needle nose plires to push rope off his teeth. Rinse and repeat! Gar put up some amazing fights!!

We used this method after losing about $20 worth of lures to these suckers. Insides of their mouths are so strong its rare that you get a hook in there. And even with leaders on our lines they snapped them too. Wrote this figuring maybe you'd like to try catching those other ones you can see!! :)

@Drizzle, That seems like a lot of fun! We saw about six cars at once right in a narrow canal waiting for stuff to float by... We didn't know we hooked him so he had enough time to swallow the hook, and I'll definitely have to try that method!

@Pzyk, About 10-12 inches!

It's a blast. It looked like the whole surface of water was covered with floating logs. Never seen so many gar at once in my life. We checked it every year but it was only responding for like 3 years in a row.

Shot quite a few of them while bow fishing too. There is some monsters up north in MN!!
