"a" koi can surely survive in an aerated pond of 800 gallons if you have some plants.
:iagree:You have to be careful how much you feed though. Will water changes be done?

Carp, not koi(but included)can do nicely in anything unfiltered of size, but need space and filtration to thrive

I wouldn't try it... the ammonia and nitrites would build up with out frequent water changes, and the chemicals used to purify the water would take a toll on the fish... and the frequent water changes would kill the fish from pure stress.. albeit if you could, theoretically, keep the fish in good health in an unfiltered pond, he would grow to his full size (about 3 feet) fairly quickly, say, 3 or 4 years rather than 6 or 7

There are success stories, but these stories come from the advance pond experts. It all boils down to calculating how much bioload a "Natural" pond can take. 800g isn't big enough to house more than one or possibly two. Pond fish are tough though, but it does put stress on them.

There have been a few stories of people buying abandoned homes to only find a backyard pond with koi happily living in them for the past 2-3 years.

Nice tread now you guys just made me wonder, I have a 150gal rubber maid tub I'm planning on adding some of my cichlids in there for the summer, I was told that with a lot of plants they should be fine both oxigen wise and ammonia wise.

Do I need some sort of water movement in there?
How many cichlids can be added to it?
Should I do any wcs to it? How often? How much?

Thanks

Juan
