Unhappy with LFS.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
how about this for a LFS story... i live about 65 miles from reno, nv which is where me and my buddy Hawkeye get alot of our fish and supplies. this past friday i called him up from reno to tell him about 2 fish that he had been looking for and got them for him... one was a ghost knifefish ($15) and the other was a golden nugget pleco ($20)... well the pleco died so he called up the fish store and they told him that they have a no fish return policy, all sales final... now this guy that owns this fish store sells some pretty pricy fish and once you walk out the door and if your fish dies OOOPS sorry you can't have your money back... needless to say i won't be going back there, i don't think that is a way to run a business... i know there are some store owners that are part of MFK so please feel free to comment... am i wrong in what i say???

well, sadly, business is a business. He should have made it obviously clear that they don't give back refunds under any circumstances. You should have either known that or asked. I think its wrong to run a business that way, but that might be his only guaranteed way of making a profit. I know that my Petco sells saltwater fish on a no-refund basis, no matter the circumstances. :)

the LFS sells both freshwater and saltwater items and fish... i see your point about business being business but to sell fish that are pretty pricy and to have no return policy is bad business in my eyes... i'm not saying not to have one on fish that are just a couple of dollars...

I agree that you should always ask about the return policy. It's not wrong to run a shop that way but it may not be the best way to make money in the long run.

I have to admit that many fish die because of thier owners. I was in a lfs yesterday and I had a guy tell me that his 6" cichlid was killing the other smaller ones.... he had them in a 29gal..... 7 cichlids in a 29gal :screwy:

Petsupplies+ employees are off. I saw a jardini and asked them how much. And htey asked me how much are they outside  Can you belive that. So they gave it to me for $20, a 6' jardini :naughty:

The store owner should inform thier customers what the return policy is but ultimatly it is the buyers who should be asking before they make a purchase.

I offer a gaurantee but it has limitations. If a person dose something to kill the new fish they just bought, it's not my fault and I should not be asked to be held financially responcible. If a seemingly healthy fish dies and all checks out ok, I offer a replacement or at least a partial replacement.

Many shops don't offer gaurantee's because people pull sh*t on them with bogus water samples, dead fish they have kept in thier freezer and return it with a reciept from a fish they just bought, etc... (I don't want to give out to many ideas) I can tell you first hand, it's tough enough being in business for your self with out people ripping you off. I have cronic problem customers that I offer NO gaurantee to on anything. I'm fair but I'm going to try real hard to not get screwed over. I litterally have banned people from my shop because that were constantly pulling sh*t on me or at least trying. And they say"you just lost a customer!!!" I say "I jusy lost a pain in the A** that looses my shop money"

Dose this have anything to do with the original thread topic? :D

Yup I like Fronts and they are harder to get around here then you'd think. No one has them, if they do its b/c of a mix up ona shipment and they sell for $21 for like 2 inches. A local breeder wont sell them to any one but lfs and only one at that and thats a place called fishy biz. They get them maybe one time our of the year and they are still expenisive its a pain in the butt. I ran into a good deal when I got mine. Along with Datnoids they are bizatch to get around here to only one place has them and if we're lucky they may come. its annoying. They never have a good choice of africans not that I dont like mine, but where are the unique ones. Like xenotilapia no one will even ship that here and they are legal. no one can special order it and its to expensive to have it shipped.

Ash what part of FL are you in?

The LFS around me alway has fronts for decent prices.

uhm winterpark, outskirts of east orlando I am far from you =)

I can understand your complaint but have you looked at it from the other side right now africans sell so thats what your gonna primarly stock. I ran the cichlid department for a store that is now out of buisness and i can tell you first hand that everybody wants to see rare and exotic cichlid but they dont want to spend the money for them. I did a large order from rapps and brought in a bunch of cool stuff but nobody wanted to spend the money they prefer the 4-8 dollar fish like oscars, JD, and GT.

because of katrina i started my own lil breeding to help supply 1 shop. I was able to get SO prs from another.

out of 4 shops around me, 3 are good with 1 not that good. I still cant get the end piece I need for coralife cfl that rusted on me and he wont try to say it was a defect and just replace the light.
