I have 6 goldfish and a couple baby crayfish in an uheated 55 gal. tank. I want to know what else could be in there that won't mess with the goldfish. The crayfish will be coming out of there soon since they are getting bigger. I read an article in Aquarium USA that cory cats and some tetra can be in unheated tanks and sometimes do better in cooler tanks. Also, livebearers which are wild caught. Anyone have any feedback on this or know of any other fish I could add to this tank, I would appreciate it.
thanks,

I think weather loach is OK.

When you say unheated it can mean a lot of different temps. If your house is centrally heated and the tank will stay around 68F then there are some 'tropical' species that will be OK. So check what the actual temp is, especially in cold weather, to get a better idea of what can survive.

Other problem is keeping fish compatible with goldfish. Goldfish get pretty big and are likely to eat a lot of potential tankmates. Guppys and white cloud minnows are a snack for a big goldfish.

Weather Loach would be a good pick. Some plecos can live in cooler water, but be carefull there because many of them will get too big for a 55gal tank.

Cheers

I have a lot of tanks if something outgrows the 55. The house is around 70-75 degrees. If I can find a weather loach, I would love to have one of them. I dont think I want to do a pleco, and I dont know what ones would even be alright in cool water.

weather loaches are pretty social, if you think you can fit them into the tank or a future tank, get 3 or so. they get 10+inches though. honestly, 6 goldfish is about the limit for a 55.

:iagree:

I don't think 6 goldfish fills up a 55. Whe they get too big, I have many tanks to rehouse them in and someday hope to have a pond. How about a gold nugget pleco?? They dont seem to get too big, but will he do alright in room temp. water? I have some cory's now with the goldfish and they seem to be doing great.

If you don't see them listed as weather loaches check under the name dojo loach
