The midas actually belongs to my brother, he's my partner in the fortune fish venture. I've asked him to take the midas and syn & put them in one of his 75's, and also advised him to have some eggcrate ready. I believe part of the problem is, the largest tank I have is a 55, I think they need a minimum of 75 for him to leave her alone when not laying eggs, and even then I'm not so sure. I agree on the midas, he's gonna be a stunner, when my brother texted me his pic, I immediately told him he HAD to buy this fish! We have his smaller sibling as well, my bro has that fish at his house, we think it's a female.
I've got two other pairs that are acting like spawning is imminent, pink fene X parrot seems to be very close, hopefully in the next few days. The carpintis X syn I'm not sure, maybe in the next week or so, maybe sooner?
I have the ingredients to make RBK, I might do that, but if I do, I still want to maintain some strains separately.
I'll probably tinker around with some line breeding, I was able to (in 3 generations) consistently create, some pretty awesome sb green carpintis through linebreeding. Fortune fish just seem like the logical progression from that experience. It'll be a much better test of some of my theories, much clearer examples of empirical evidence. For instance, I theorize that a strain consisting of 62.5% carpintis/37.5% syn, will produce fertile males. The same might be true with a 62.5% pink fene 37.5% parrot strain, although I wouldn't be exactly surprised if they weren't. I think the whole vieja/paraneetroplus complex is tricky, hence the difficulty with finding fertile male Kamfa's.
One of my less developed theories is that syn in particular are the culprit. Perhaps other species in the vieja/paraneetroplus group are less likely to produce infertile sons when used in hybrid projects? I'd like to find out.
I also theorize that crossing one of these fertile strains to an fh (or any fish really), and then back crossing a daughter to the orginal 62.5%/37.5% father, would also produce fertile males. That's the one I really want to find out for sure. I have a pair of (low to mid grade) red dragons growing out that have red eyes, it's a good bet the male is fertile, I'd like to see if he is, then do some test spawns with him as well. If he was bred to a 50/50 syn X carpintis female, then cross a daughter from that spawn back to him, would that make fertile male fry? I very much suspect it would.
