Ive always been a Firemouth fan and wondered if there were different species rather than just the run of the mill ones you get a the chain pet stores? I google imaged it and there were some more colorful ones but not sure if they were just in breeding colors?

You will find some regional variants of the firemouth with subtle differences.
In case you don't know, firemouths belong to the thorichthys family consisting of around 10 species.
Have a look at helleri, maculipinnis, aureus, affinis, socolofi and pasionis there are more if you can find them.

Cool. Thanks. I'll do some more research.

I have the perfect fish for you - ellioti cichlid. (Thorichthys ellioti/maculipinnis).
Available from most LFS for around 2-3x the price of a normal firemouth. Around my area I haven't seen any of the other variants. Much prettier IMO. Get to around 6", pretty hardy, and I think about similar temperament to firemouths (semi-aggressive, pretty peaceful for a CA cichlid).

This is a stock photo. I just bought one yesterday. Once he's bigger and coloured up I'll post photos.

Good call. I've seen a similar picture somewhere and knew that wasn't just a regular firemouth. Cool fish! Anxious to see the pics!

I would recommend thorichthys helleri.
They are the most peaceful thorichthys I have kept so far and very attractive in my opinion.

Here are a few of mine.

I've always wondered why this group of fish has failed to garner more attention than they do. Maybe it's just cause the rest don't have a cool name like firemouth.
