Okay, I'm sorry I couldn't get a better picture. But I have a fish that looks exactly like the one with the red (minus the obvious color enhancement). I work at a pet store and somebody brought him in saying he was returning a jack dempsey, because he was too mean. Obviously not a jack dempsey, but we took him anyway. Couldn't sell him so I took him home. We've been trying to find out what he is, but all we could figure out was that he is South American. He's actually light gray and black, and he has very very faint red coming back into him. But he looks exactly like that fish otherwise.
Anyways! If anybody can tell me what that fish is up there, that'd be fantastic. My fish certainly doesn't look that tough, but eh. I can't get a decent picture of him at all. I'm just trying to figure out what I can expect from him.
Thank you thank you thank you in advance!

Here's the thing... I definitely considered a stressed out firemouth, however he completely lacks the spot on the tail and has no defined spot on his gills like firemouths do. Is it possible that stress could get rid of those? Most firemouths I've seen just lose the red. But barred midas I have not heard of, but I just looked it up and he does look quite a bit like one.
I thought the fish on the package might have been a firemouth, but wasn't sure.
But thank you! Nobody else at the store thought he might've been a firemouth. I'm glad to know I wasn't alone in that.
Thanks again!

that is a drawing on a food package not a real pic, so spots stripes ect. might not be totally accurate, it is a firemouth

tetracanthus meeki

Tetracanthus? I think you mean Thorichthys meeki.

If it's only got very feint red it's possibly another species from the Thorichthys genus as they're all very similar obviously.
