it is an algae. they are pretty popular in reef tanks and you are lucky you got one. I had one too. They are stiff and look womderful. Umfortnately they die off easily.

Does anyone know what they're called? I'd like to do some research on them. I still find it hard to believe that this is an algae of any kind.

That algae you showed us here is a member of the genus gelidium and most likely Gelidium serrulatum:
