Unnecessary arbitrary water changes?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thats why most do regularly scheduled water changes. that way when saturday comes around, ill say oh crap! "ITS ABOUT TIME DO A WATER CHANGE!" much easier than YOUR logic
now thats astounding

I think he said he changes his water when the nitrates are at 20 which there is nothing wrong with that. Why u guys getting all bent out of shape?
He asked if anyone does it via testing.....
I think thats fine. If it works for him than more power to him.
I think every other day is too much. Thats my opinion. I don't feel the water gets truely clean. No nitrates but may have some other cr*p in it, but it obviously works for you so I would stick with it.
I love you guys and hate to see all the fighting

LOL LOL LOL LOL

Every other day on a ray tank is NOT too much....They poop more than the fish most of us keep.....So please lets stop the nonsense.....Rays and discuss need more changes than gold fish lmfao...A gold fish can live in a PILE OF POOP FOR A DAY OR TWO, BE PUT BACK IN THE WATER, AND NOT EVEN LOOSE ANY SLIME COAT...a ray on the other hand, even a few moments in bad water would result in death....I change my tanks depending on what the tank is...Breeding, 10 ppm...Common 40 ppm...Planted...I'm afraid to test the water...lol I was told by a pro to only change the water every three months or so, and my plants are alive and well for the first time....I do not have a robotic schedule.....

Agreed..........except don't worry on plants........I change 40% every other day in my planted 125 gallon and all is growing well!

@ spiff...

It's apparent that you'd already decided prior to starting this thread that your water change schedule is right and everyone else's is flawed. I'm not knocking your method of deciding when it's time to do a water change as long as your water stays clean and your fish stay healthy... and others in this thread have stated the same. Do what works for you, and don't be so critical of what works for others.

My 2 cents:

If spiff is happy and the fish are happy by using test kits to monitor params then thats fine by me, hotfishgirls every other day changes sounds excessive to people who don't change every other day then it probably is for them, but it works for her.

For me the large tank gets done every 2 weeks 50%, based on the odd test every 6 months or so, I'm sure it could go for well over month with no problems and sometimes I do it on the 3rd week, due to work commitments. I change the water to maintain a healthy tank but more importantly piece of mind. Other tanks are on a different schedules, the smallest tank is on a much more frequent change cycle because it's only been set up for a couple of months.

IMO it doesn't take long to dial yourself and fish into the tnak/water change schedule once fully established that keeps the fish happy, don't forget we all keep different types of fish some need more changes than others

My personal experience, I have a constant nitrate tester on my tank. when it gets to 10ppm I change the water. and my tanks very packed. and I only do 30% about once every 2 weeks.

In my 125 (when it was set up, I took it down when I moved) I do very little in the way of water changes. maybe 10% a month or so, but I do have a large 50 gallon sump where I grow water hyacinths and I harvest them out every couple of weeks. I also grow swamp trees in the main tank which also absorb lots of nutrients from the water. My water stays very clean and the fish do extremely well.

This is the kind of thing that I want to do... as soon as I have the space and time :)
