i saw a guy that got a batch of retics with fungus around their barbs. the next day they were dead. they prob got stuck in their box too long

Did the ray come in with a fungus on the stinger? Usually it from them being shipped in too small of bags, and having their tail come up out of the water, and drying out.. leads to fungal infection or loss of tail.. Saw this alot with Antenna rays.. But with a long tail like that, still intact, it would have fallen off at the importer and/or been damaged at the LFS.. I think it would have lost it's tail by now, if it was pre-existing..

So..

Did it happen afterwards? Because if so, I know why :D

Lack of swimming space (note, the bad choice of decor), which makes the ray constantly swimming up the side of your glass (as noted in the pix), as it is looking for more open swimming space. Keep in mind, in the wild, they can always swim up, over, and around something, but not in your glass box.

So the constant climbing of the walls is making it bob up and down on that portion of the tail, rubbing it against the (silica?) sand, making it worse.. The constant bouncing up and down on the tail is stressful for the ray, removes the slime coat of that area, and fuels fungal growth..

Remove the decor.. Salt and Heat.. Good water quality.

I noticed when I moved my retics from a 2' wide tank to a 18" wide tank, they climb the glass alot more.. especially when hungry. They bounce on their tail once or twice, on the barebottom, but then they seem to stop as it is irritable to them.. Maybe for your scenario, the sand acts as a 'cushion' and the ray just wants to escape that ugly decor so bad, it just keep bouncing, and bouncing..

The long tail could also be rubbing up against those abrasive fake corals, when he is trying to navigate through and around them..
