Untreated drift wood ?

Do a search for Curing wood. I posted a while back the method I use to curing woods. As long as it fits in your bathtub you can cure it. Wood will dye your tank if you don't cure it. I have 100 lbs in my 135 and it has no color to the water.

You need to soak it for a month...the driftwood leaches tanin acid, and turns the water yellow. Water changes are recommended.

Second, don't get driftwood from LFS, chech out Foster/Smith website.

I would recommend water changes for all tanks, regardless of if there is wood in the tank.

Technically a bog is a body of water that gets replenished ONLY by rainwater and no other source. Bog water is typically still, stagnant and acidic which is actually a good thing in the sense that the wood stays well preserved. The downside is that there will likely be more tannins to leach out of it than wood from "non-bogs".

As for curing, the first important thing is to make sure that you kill living organisms that are on or in it. This can be acheived by boiling and/or soaking repeatedly with salt. Some people use a sandblaster to strip off all the bark and loose external junk.

For some reason it was difficult to type bog water instead of bong water.
I don't know why.
