Unusual aquatic pets?

Something I forgot to mention and haven't seen in the replies. If you spook the octopus, it will shoot ink into the tank. This necessitates an emergency large water change to keep the octopus from killing itself. For me, living in the lightning capital of America, I think this disqualifies me. One of the reasons I like living here is the thunderstorms. I imagine they get comfortable after a while, but still...
Most never ink in captivity. Not quite sure what you mean by living in the lightning capital of America - do you keep any fish, then? Do you drink water or shower or wash clothes?

I meant, from the thunder. We have house shaking thunderstorms pretty regular here. I love that, but I can't control it. Many dogs suffer from anxiety from that. With my luck, I'd need to get one of those stress sweaters for the octopus and you know that would be a pain in the butt to put on...

Naw octopi love sweaters! You just have to get them custom made for all 8 arms.

On the topic of Cephalopods, I think it would be difficult to keep them humanely given how intelligent these creatures are. I know it would be beyond what I could do at the moment and probably in the future.

Yeah, you're lucky to get a year out of an octopus. You've also got to set up a pretty ingenious tank in order to prevent escapes. Feeding isn't too difficult, just whole seafood.
Look into dwarf cuttlefish. They're slightly less interesting than an octopus, but they live a few years, you can hatch them from eggs, they'll breed, and you can keep multiple of them. They're also much less prone to escaping.

These look super cool, especially their feeding. Locating them might be difficult though.

They're awesome. You can usually get the eggs ordered into a LFS if they carry saltwater stuff. That way you can hatch them in a breeder box and keep them a full year, if not more.
On the topic of your ray/mbu idea, even one of those will not work. There are no rays that can comfortably fit in a 55 gallon, and even a young mbu would be cramped in that.

Ah OK, I'll keep that in mind. And I would never keep those in a 55 hence me saying "tank size aside which I appreciate will be significantly more".
