I got a small RTC two weeks ago. the first few days i had him he was energetic then he got comfortable and found his home under a pot. then since yesterday he started coming out from hiding whether the lights were on or not and wont stop swimming. his mouth looks like hes partially stuck open like somethings in it. but i dont have any rocks or anything. should i be worried? anything i can do

Catfish will find a home and stay in that home. My bumblebee catfish doesn't ever come out unless there is food. Both pictus cats stay in their homes, and the same with a RTC.

And you mentioned his mouth being partially opened; is he breathing fast?

the tank hes in now is a standard 40 gal. i got him when he was like 1" and now hes about 2 maybe a little over 2" its just the fact that he hasnt stopped swimming for four hours. and he didnt eat earlier when i dropped blood worms in

a RTC not eating!!! doesnt sound good but im not sure what could be wrong.. Good Luck

as with all fish some vary from the standard. as in some are more actiuve or less active, or more aggressive or less aggresive.
There always seems to be a few fish that just dont go by the book.

Swimming is fine. Our RTC swimms all the time, he only actually beds down in his log a few times.
He wakes up every morning (unlike how he's supposed to be a dark loving almost completely nocturnal cat) and swimms toward the sunlight coming in from the living room window. When our cichlid light comes on he swimms over there and hovers around starting at that light.

I really dont know what to say about your babys mouth neing open. I would say be sure EVERYTHING in the tank is accounted for, rocks, decor. thermometers, suction cups, EVERYTHING. They all are non-descriminate eaters to a point.
Also, when they "outgrow" certain foods (its too small for them to eat) they need to eat larger foods. Since the bloodworms may be too small to be worth the effort for the litttle guy try THAWED frozen beefheart. But be aware the RTC grows fast and a 40g simply wont last long as a home for him (he gets to 6ft in the Amazon)

i know about the whole size thing. hes just in a 40 gal because its in my room. the only reason the swimming concernd me was because for a week and a half he was a hider. but when he swims pass the intake for the filter he doesnt get dragged into it so i guess it shows hes not losing strength. i throw a mix of a blood worm cube. and a frozen krill. hes now showing the straight floating and random wiggle and spin. im pretty sure he might be a goner:cry:
