Hey speaking of live rock....I'm thinking about spending $180 to purchase cured live rock from divers den on live aquaria...only 25 pounds. I know it's way over priced, but will it be able to seed my 40 pounds of rock with purple and help with water parameters....I decided to place this question here because didn't want to waste a thread lol

why spend sooo much on rock you can't pick out? whats wrong with a local fish store?
also, putting new rock, shipped damp, wrapped in newspapers, straight in your tank will destroy water parameters for a while.

i would go with a few pounds of nice purple rock you pick out, regular water changes, and steady alk, calc, and magnesium levels to spur the coralline growth. a little purple up never hurt either

well, you can't really cycle a tank without live stock in there or adding ammonia to get the nitrogen cycle going.

Not true, LR (epecially uncured LR) is actually a great source of both ammonia and bacterial cultures.

this is the same process described in the next post when myfisheatyourfish says "it destroys your water quality for a few days" this is the cycle.

$7.20/lb isn't outrageous for premium LR. If you are paying less than that, it wasn't flown in. It costs roughly that much to get to your door by airfreight. Fosters can do this price b/c they actually cure that stuff in vats during the shipping freight. I have had very good luck buying rock from Fosters. On the other side, you can probably get some nice rock from your LFS (as referenced by myfish) and you could get the same thing done.
