Once again it's that very small crowd pushing this. George Takei himself made the statement once that he is g@y but Sulu is not. Even though they never mentioned him(Sulu) with a partner. He is very clearly shown in episodes showing interests in women... not to mention he had a daughter.

Except Takei wasn’t overjoyed. He had never asked for Sulu to be g@y. In fact, he’d much prefer that he stay straight.

He went on to say they should have created a new character as being g@y.
