Update of 310 gallon tank (pics)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
what the fff...... I guess we'll just have to see what its going to be :D :D

man its really coming along good. I can't wait to see the finished product with water and whatnot cause I may just have to sell some things I have around to house and begin construction!!!! :naughty:

i'd love those dimensions because I could keep 3 stingrays in something that size... phenomenal job. also, im checking out your band on myspace... good stuff brotha... im a killswitch engage and god forbid fan... with a bit more exposure who knows, you may be MFK's first celebrity.

haha word that would be cool... but i dont think i can compete wit some of the fishy celebs on here
like johnptc... nuthing beats that arapaima gigas of his...
But yea the dimensions r pretty sweet... real stressfull for the ground though... luckily i live on the bottom floor of a indrustrial style building with concrete floors and no basement...
if i ever have to move it though ill have to do some serious reinforcement...

Its kinda hard to tell wat it is... basically its this corner piece with 2 caves ontop of eachother and then on the one side theres a tree logged inbetween the rocks... not somethin u wud see in real life unless the tree was fossilized... but i had the image in my head and i had to do it...

After cuttin up all this styrofoam i notice my finger going kinda numb but i figured it was just cuz i was grippin the knife hard. Anyway after a while i notice it getting more numb till i realized my whole thumb down to my rist had no feeling in it. Being a biology student I start thinking what cud cause this. I finally concluded that since styrofoam and polystyreen glue have glass fibers in them they probably made microscopic cuts in my skin allowing the chemicals from the glue to leach through... numbing my finger... (later on my whole hand went numb)
It was numb for almost 2 days...

lesson learned: either wear gloves or wash ur hands really well after workin with these things...

So i finally finished exams.. hope i passed... we shall see
so this weekend i got back to my tank.. i finally got someone to help me turn it back the right way up after puttin the glass in. it was excited to see if the overflow pipes would fit nicely through the ply on the stand and if there would be enough space for the screw on attatchments.... and as you can see it worked out perfectly. the glass and all the silicone is all on nice n solid... technically the tank is ready to get its top put on but i am waiting with that cuz i first wanna finish my styrofoam cut outs cuz i needa place them in and out to make sure they fit nicely around the pipes...
the pictures show the results up till now... i how now that ive put the pieces together its clearer what the styrofoam is supposed to be...
on the left there is a tree petrified into a hunk of rock that is making up a 2 layers cave. imagination is great :>
I still need to put a small layer of styrofoam to cover where the pipe runs through and then its ready to get weighted, cemented, painted and sealed.

next week its time for water testing so wish me luck and keep ur fingers crossed

man nice looking tank

Cool idea on the foam, looks like tree roots.

I like what you done, maybe not the overflows, I think i would have used bulkheads for that, I know its wood and what not, but i think that *might* leak after i while, however i REALY do hope not.

thanks alot... it looks like tree roots... cuz well thats what its gonne be :>

but yea i was afraid of leakage aswell but thats why i decided to go totally nuts on silicone... empied like 3 tubes on it.. did it in layers too so that if for some reason one would break then it still have lik 8 more to work through
i dont think it will leak but only time will tell...
if i do notice a leak... well then i have one hefty water change on my hands :P

but why do u think it will leak?

well this statement got me thinkin... i really dont want it to leak... so i went nuts and added another few layers of silicone on it... i think itll b alright... i mean theres SO MUCH silicone holding it in place that it really has a lot of elasticity.. it would take alot of push and shove to get it to leak.

I just want to say though, anybody who plans on building a tank... prepare for ALOT of frustration. Im so close to being done yet so far... Now its time for all the little things and got those little things are annoying and time consuming.... it really makes you want to cut corners... but with 1200 liters of water u really do not want to risk it...

I JUST WANT IT TO BE FINISHED!!!!
