Update of My Baby!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
She is a a 120 gallon for the time being and I caught her in a throw net. Growth is starting to slow down. Stripers are supposed to hit 12-13" in the first year and then they grow up to about 3"s a year after that. So She is a little behind and I don't expect that kind of growth in a tank.. I'm hoping to keep her for the long haul.

Good luck keeping it for the long haul this one was 54 inches. With that potential your going to need a really big tank to keep one for its full life

LOL I'll take my chances, The fish that you pictured is over 20 year old. I've also mention that when I am unable to care for her any longer, she will reside in the zoo. :)

This is true but aren't those stocked? I know they stock them in a lot of large freshwater lakes and reservoirs throughout the US.
Initially they were stocked as it was thought they would not be able to reproduce - they normally reproduce in moving water as the eggs will die if they touch the bottom. They thought they would just grow big and be fun to catch. Well they ended up finding a way to spawn in deep water and now they're going bananas. It's ruined all the fisheries along the Colorado River. A saltwater predator in fresh water eating everything in sight. Most lakes don't have a limit as they want as many out as possible.

so cool... striper, largemouth, pbass dream tank of mine... you need a smallmouth and some of those spotted FL.Largemouths to complete it.... its funny though because I believe the striper is the only true "bass" out of all of them. Since the pbass is "cichla" and a largemouth is a perch-type.

Do you plan on keeping it freshwater its entire life or switching back to salt? Ive been curious about these for quite some time ive seen hybrids thrive in fw but havent heared of an aquariast trying srait striper in fresh. Love the fish btw one of my favorite natives by far

The Bass Pro Shop by me has a few big stripers in fresh water and they seem to doing fine.

LOL, I don't know who's bright idea that one was but not a very good one lol. The Colorado river is a river so it's moving water and no lake is stagnant, there is always a river channel that runs down the middle with moving water and flow. The only thing they need for the eggs to thrive is a decent amount of water movement so that the eggs tumble and pretty much every lake has that. All in all the purples, blues, olives and gold on these fish are truly amazing and also how graceful they are. They are a great fish to own and catch, you can't hate them for their big appetite. ;)

A smallmouth and some peacock bass would be awesome! I also think your right, the only true bass would be the striper.

They survive fine in freshwater. I actually thinks she might even like it better. Probably because I am about to do more frequent and larger water changes than when it was salt.

Whats her interaction like? Smart fish?

Oh yeah! She's basically acts just like a puppy. This fish probably has the best personality than any other fish I've owned.. She never sits still and likes to school with other fish, she'll lead or follow, and will also hang in one spot paddling to keep up in the current. She's a fast aggressive feeder with a ton of power behind her but has an extremely mild temperament and does not bully any other fish in my tank. She'll greet you when you come into the room and get all excited cruising around the tank fast but always stays at the mid range of the tank and never sits at the top, which I like. She is definitely a super curious fish. The only time she kind of sits still is when your nose is against the glass and your trying to get a good look and she'll be doing the same right back always wagging her tail. Maybe I'll try to get a video of a feeding this weekend. The jacks are extremely fast too.
