If you want a decent measurement but do not want to remove the fish to do it (I agree with not removing it just for measuring BTW) then you should tape a yard stick to the top of the tank. Oscars come to the front often especially for feeding and you could pretty easily snap a pic for reference. Won't be 100% but no one would be able to argue the fish being smaller than you see the measurement in a pic.
