Update on Jack's & Texas - Need Advice on My Huge Bully!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry about the water on the outside of the tank! They just made a big splash & I didn't notice it when I was taking the pics!!! LOL!!! I told my husband he filled the tank too high!! They've been splattering water everywhere!

thats a huge and really nice texas , you should get atleast three if your getting red hook dollar (because they grow larger) and 5 if your getting common silver dollar
but I would suggest red hooks because of their large size and and less timid behaviour.

your african is a red top zebra. I have one in my sa tank and he bullies my texas(6") my adult severums do too. otherwise he just a meanie. I tried reintroducing my female festae into the tank and my tex about killed her before I pulled her back out. By the the way that texas is awesome.

Thanks!!! Yes, Charlie, the South African, is a non-stop pest! Charges everyone else and is constantly trying to get them to fight. It's hysterical to watch because the other fish are so much bigger than him! But he doesn't care. I always say it's like having a gnat flying around you that won't stop! lol! Once in awhile his lip will be busted up. I always say somebody finally got tired of him and bit down hard! He has no fear! I've thought about trying to introduce another one to the tank but wasn't sure if I should try that. Plus, I haven't seen any like him in any of the shops I frequent.

The South African grew up with one of my JD's which is why I have him. When I bought the JD, I didn't want to separate them. It was the only fish the JD didn't kill! That's what the prior owner told me. I believe it though. The little guy is a terror.

Anyway.....Thanks for the compliment on the Texas. I'm most attached to him since he was my first and I've brought him back to life more than once! He's such a survivor and definitely has a strong personality.

theres not much u can do but

1.get a bigger tank
2.take out either the texas or the jd
u can try adding more hiding places see if that works, u can also buy some dither fish like tiger barbs or giant danios

I find only 2 things work to reduce aggression: bigger tank and hiding spots. I believe cichlids only really care about other cichlids in their territory. Dithers only really work in breeding.
Tank size and hiding spot are key, especialy w/ texas cichlids. The bigger the fish, the more territory they will need.

Is it just me or does that texas look like its mixed with a midas? something about the face and length of the tail fins doesn't look right to me..

Nice looking fish either or.

Well, I'm shocked everyone has said how nice he looks because he literally has had his tail almost completely gone and regrown it, his sides have fallen off to where you literally see no scales and just flesh and he's regrown them as well. I literally have helped him come back to life on several occassions. When I first got him and then 2 times when we went out of town, we'd come back and he'd be near death. That was with someone staying in my home & taking care of them. He'd be the only one who'd get sick. I told my husband I think he just doesn't like us leaving. LOL!

Anyway, his lip has also been half chewed off and hasn't grown back fully. That was when I first introduced the BIG JD, Bert. They fought badly. At that time Bert was the biggest in the tank but now the Texas is the biggest! It's completely reveresed.

Thanks!

I don't know how I could fit a bigger tank in my house! This one is 6 ft long! My husband would have a fit if I told him we need a bigger tank! LOL! I think I'm going to try more hiding spots first, then if that doesn't work, I'll add dithers.

Last time this happened, I added Bert, one of the JD's and it calmed the tank down. And I think others are right about the Texas getting bored. This morning when we got up, he had rearranged half the tank! I'm also going to try the ping pong ball idea.

Bert, a JD, was looking pretty beat up this morning and now has damage on one side so I separated him out by himself until I can get his side healed. I just put a homemade divider in so he has 1/3 of the tank and the other firsh have the rest.

Thanks for all the advice!

My 10" texas male is a bully as well; just the texas nature not much you can do about it. They tend to always chase fish around, but aren't big into actually beating them to a pulp. And to the poster that aquired about it being a hybrid, it looks 100% cyano to me.

You might try the dither approach, but I doubt it will solve it completely; it'll just give her more to chase around! As far as how many, you could do 5 or 6 silvers in a tank that size. red hooks are a bit harder to find, but I'm sure you could do a few of those as well. Tiger barbs I do not suggest, cause if the jack is a bit stressed out, they are notorios fin nippers, and might do more damage to her.. Other kinds of barbs do well also, just steer away from the prettier, more expensive ones! Dithers are always expiremental and and I do not suggest ringing up a decent bill on them!

Good luck with everything though. Your fish look nice and healthy and seem to have a very caring owner..
