Update on Jack's & Texas - Need Advice on My Huge Bully!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks so much!!! Yours is gorgeous!!! Yes, Jackie, that's her name. Well, I thought it was a her but several on here have said Jackie looks like a Jack. :) I don't know still.....Jackie doesn't extend the dorsel very often so I can't really tell if there's a black spot on it or not. I was told this is how you sex them.

My husband said we've probably caused half their problems by calling them girls when their guys!! LOL! :) Anyway, Jackie, my Texas does just what you're saying - constant chasing - not really lip locking and fighting like the JD's have been known to do.

And thanks for the advice on the Dithers. Yes, this happened once when I tried to introduce Tiger Barbs. I bought 5 and they were too small. We woke up the next morning and they'd all been eaten! My husband said they just had an expensive Sushi dinner! LOL!

I'm going to take your advice on the dithers. :) Thanks a lot! I'm trying my best to do right by them. I really do get their personalities and I just love them! I never knew fish could have such personalities and intention. It amazes me all the time!

Your Texas is gorgeous! I was born & rasied in Ft Worth Texas so we think it's quite fitting that our baby is a Texan! :) Thanks again!

texas's are just bullies same with jack dempseys

plus texas's just like picking on things and usually either kill them or the other fish kills them mine did :(

Thanks! Yes, they're both bullies! :) I'm new to posting on here.....was the quote "I think it's a female" meant for me? You think my Texas is a female? I wonder because the Texas tries to do the shimmy but it's very funny because Jackie is sooooooooo big that it's hard for her/him! :) Just curious.....Thanks!

Wow! Well, I'm going to try and get use to calling my Texas Jack! :) Everyone keeps saying it's a male. So be it. But why the hell would he shimmy in front of my male JD's. LOL!!! Like my husband said......we've just given them all a personality complex! LOL!!! My husband is an Aussie by the way! Born and raised in Sydney's North Shore & the wine country of Mudgee. Take care!

IMO Take the JD back to the LFS.
JD's are a dime a dozen.
That is a real nice Texas.

No Freaking Way!!!! They're all my babies....I just couldn't. Plus, it's rare to find people who know how to take care of these guys, especially when they're this big. Most people don't want to spend the money.......It costs a ton just to feed them, not to mention everything else to keep the tank going. Anyway, thanks for the opinion but no. :(

I'd go get a peice of egg creat and divide the tank in 2. That is the only way the texas is going to leave the JD alone. Texas are always bullies and very few JD's are going to hang with them. If you don't separate them the texas is eventually going to kill the JD. No amount of rearranging is going to fix the problem other then making it so the texas cannot get to the JD. Once it has killed the weaker JD it is going to eventually start on the other one and kill it as well. Just the way texas are.

Hi J! I don't totally disagree with you. Yes, we made a divider long ago and I've had that in the last couple of days. Bert, the JD who was getting beat up, is by himself. He looks a ton better now - not pale and he's eating a ton! So good news there!

The other JD, Buddy, grew up with the Texas. I bought him as a baby when the Texas was way smaller. That's when I didn't know the Texas was a Texas. :) Anyway, if I separate those two, they both get upset. The Texas doesn't seem to bother Buddy and gets upset when I separate them. So we'll see if he turns on him or not.

In the meantime, I'm going to get Bert fully healed before I take the divider out and see what happens. I got them live feeders last night and that's made them all very happy! Plus it's given the Texas something to chase around. LOL! :)

Hopefully I can get them in harmony again! I mean, they did live together for an entire year with little to no incident. It's just since the Texas has gotten so big that there's been a problem! We'll see.......

Thanks!

By the way....Your tank with the Discus is gorgeous! I'd love to see pics of all your tanks! I can't imagine having a 220 gallon. That's almost twice the size of mine! I just can't imagine! It must take up your entire living room! Anyway, beautiful Discus..... Makes me want to set a tank up! :)
