I can not compare gar to any other fish I've kept.. they are unique in their own right. like leviathons.. I guess is the best way I can describe them.
And no they don't usually use the big tube. The angle is actually pretty tight so it would be hard for them to manuver. I've only found them camped out once in it. Usually the fire eels are all crammed into it.. with a pike head peeking out at either end or together depending on the day. They do like sitting ontop of it though and often seem to nap atop it.
