Update on pair my pair of Channa Aurantimatacula (video)

DC, I just wanna ask how to describe their sex? And yours which one is male? The first one or the second one? Anyway you got a nice pair pal.

Thanks ! If you see them side by side there are some minor differences in head and body shape, but the easiest "sign" is the dorsal fin,

Males have less striping on the dorsal fin and a wide blue band along the top, the fins also tend to be longer or more arch shaped (this is most apparent when they are flaring at each other)

Females have slightly shorter fin's and they lack that wide blue band, instead the darker banding on orange carries right up to the top with just a narrow blue trim.

In this most recent batch the males had some white tipping on top of the blue bands but my previous pair did not, these are just a nice locality I guess?

It's all a bit of guess work of course, These 2 came in a batch of 5, they showed obvious signs of genders in both color and behavior right away.

Males were flaring at each other any time they crossed paths. The 5 turned out to be 3M 2F , with ample hiding spots I noticed this pair and another pair were sticking together while the spare male was always alone.Getting a pair and being able to spot the differences in gender is much easier if you start with a group and wait until fights break out. I think I got lucky got them at just the right age, because even while in bags if I floated one male next to the other they would flare at each other through the bag. This pair shows 0 aggression toward each other.

As for which is which in my video , Just for fun take a guess before I tell you ! I'm curious how well I described the differences.

nice tank and great fish wish they where legal in sask.

Thanks,It sucks when species are banned!

yup, first one's female , male comes out later, she is less timid then the male she come out or at least pops her head out to see what I'm up too any time i approach the tank, she also spends more time swimming or hovering mid/top level. The male quickly returns to his cave if I'm in the room. Only comes out in front of me when foods is involved .

So where's the rest? I'd love to have a pair here but only 1 LFS here sold this auranti. But similar size to yours. Not a juvie. So their prize a bit higher about RM80 around USD25. And it is hard to see them, always spend their time inside PVC...lol. If they sell juvie, I'll be the first person to have it.. :)

Every time someone posts a video or pics of their snakeheads or asian arowana from Canada I consider moving. Beautiful fish. So jealous.

The rest were sold, one person took the other pair, and another took the solo male. Fresh imports sell for 80+ USD each here in Canada. a few years back the were closer to 300 each, price has come down a bit over the past 3-5 years but they still are not easy to find. It's very rare to seem them come in under 6". I'd assume this has to do with the time between their breeding season and the fishing season, but even at 6-8" they are still quite young.
