So update on the tank. It's up and running. Decided to have a marianland emporer 400 filter along with the fluval fx6 for filtration. Hygger 800 watt for the heater and I have plans to upgrade the lighting to a KZKR Led light and add some airstones to the sides. I've added a few fish and some crayfish. Now, I'm regretting the crayfish since I didn't realize they destroy aquarium plants. I plan on evicting them to a 20 gallon tank in the garage. We found a nice honey hole of long ear sunfish with beautiful colors. They are still a bit shy so I'm hoping once I add the plants they feel a little more secure. And yes, there is one green sunfish in there as well, if he acts up we have a private pond for him.

Forgot to add that we have a uv blocker background and will be adding a canopy as well. If algae becomes an issue we will add the backer to the sides. We keep the house pretty cool and the tank hasn't been over 75 degrees which is what I have the heater at. Overall, there will be 7-8 fish in this tank with lots of caves, plants, and driftwood to break up territories.

Nice tank! I love the roots and wood.

800 watts of heater would be overkill even for a tropical 125 tank in most typical room temperatures. The sunfish won't need any heater at all and will do better without one.

So far they are still a bit shy but are starting to come out. They are actually schooling with each other on the right side of the tank and the green sunfish has made the cave on the left side his place. Haven't been able to get them to eat yet so I'm going to try some live food today. I'll be getting my plants this week too for them so hopefully they will like that.

I thought so but I figured I'd simulate the water temp that has been outside and gradually scale back. I had this from my last tank and it's a really nice heater. We do get some cold winters so it's there just in case.
