UPDATE: ortanum, festae, tetracanthus, zonatus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, I'm one of the few hobbists that actually enjoy the nomenclature and all the changes. The hobby uses exCichlasoma, which works but exHeros would be more accurate. All new world cichlids are divided into older large scale forms (Cichlasomatini - ports and acaras) and small scale forms (Heroine - everything else). Since these are not acaras, using exHeros is more correct than exCichlasoma.

But then the hobby rarely follows the science. I'm just an old, picky SOB. Heh.

As good as the Wet Spot is, they do have mix ups in the warehouse. I've bought female Crenicichla wallacii as Cr. noto's from them once. Hence the suggestion of emailing Rusty directly, I hear tell he's pretty helpful with stuff like that.

Very nice, I guess those fish I saw at a local store were Festae. Too bad I don't have room for any more.

Regardless of what your Paratheraps are, they are amazing looking. They do look more Coatzacoalcos. Where did you buy them from?

Looking good! Amazing how much color they have at this size.

Thank Peter! Which ones? Thay all (festae excluded) are coloring up really well! I am really excited, especially with the red on the zonatus. Very vibrant.

nice growouts, I'm looking forward to seeing those festae and ornatums as adults

Thanks Colin! I am looking forward to it too. Honestly I am really glad I picked up the cf. ornatum at such a small size. I get to learn a few things from others keeping them before they get to "kill each other" size. :grinno:

Thank you Chris! I did not pick up the festae locally, there are none locally to my knowledge. Please give me the heads up if you find any ;)

That makes two of us, I don't really care much about how the hobby uses so long as I'm correct. If I did I would have called them "trendy ornatum" not "cf. ornatum" lol :ROFL:Sorry for the 50 questions, just an interesting topic to me. I will drop a Rusty an email. I need to follow up with Wayne too and see if he has made any progress spawning his Satanoperca mapiritensis. Mine are getting dangerous close. [giddy like school girl]

None the less great info on the exHeros, I did not know that so thank you. I could assume that the same would hold true for the festae as well correct? Just curious but why does (sellers) not list them as exHeros?

As said beautiful growouts they are coloring up nicely. Can't wait to see your cubans grow :).

No worries. You always seem to love off topic derails in your threads. *lol*

Yup, same goes for festae. Not sure about the vendors, am guessing it hasn't been long enough yet. I mean how many Geophagus surinamensis do you still see listed despite the changes being well over 20 years now? Like I said, exCichlasoma isn't wrong per se since at one point they were in that genus, it's just less right.

Don't forget to try for more cuban pics!!

G. surinamensis... just had to go there didn't you :ROFL:Well I do love a good derail but since pics arent working right now (I shot more of the cubans for you but can't load them) I may spin this over to the discussion forum. Seems a worthy topic.

I will say this. Your paratheraps you have there are beautiful. The zonatus I had was 3-4" and was also supposedly from Rio Carolina. Yours blow mine away, you may have something else.
