Ohhh gotcha, yeah I will deffinetly invest in another tank for fry as soon as I see that they are in fact compatible and matingTo grow out fry when they spawn...They'll breed in the 40 for sure, especially if they are showing spawning behavior. Good luck, it's a bit of work involved. The male is very nice.
Thanks for all the help. So far no spawn by the two of them. They've been together for 3 days now. Spawning signals are still there, no eggs that I can find thoughOn a grow out tank set it up bare bottom do not use any substrate. This will allow you to keep the tank clean. Gravel will just get in the way and increase the chance of sucking up fry. During water changes just take a gravel vac and place it against the glass on the bottom using a slight angle suck out the yuck. This will be easiest way to ensure survival. I would suggest a strict water change schedule, like weekly or twice weekly as well. The bigger they get they dirtier they get.

At what size (age) was he sexually mature enough to fertilize ? Mine is only about 3 inches right now
right now male is about 3.5 inches female is about 3 inchesI hear zz's can start breeding at 3" if they are already mature enough. I usually start breeding my fh's at 6" on my male and 5" for the female. Bigger female = more frys if fertilize by the male.
