Updates from the 300

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I know, picture updates are what I need to be doing.

Just some comments on behavior, growth, feeding, etc.

So I have changed my feeding method a little. I started to increase the tilapia the polys get to one fillet every two days and this is fed at night after lights out. Next morning it is all gone but not seeing bulging bellies except on the cb teugelsi. Seems it is the right amount of food to meet their needs. With this night feeding I have noticed the polys do not come out as much for pellet feeding during the day. Im not sure as to growth since they all like to group huddle behind a large mopani wood and I dont see them as much as I would want. Seems like the weeksii looks thicker than before but thats about it. I need to do a good cleaning where I pull the driftwood out so I can get a better look at all the polys and see if the new feeding routine is making grow bigger.

Ive brought it up before about Hikari Massivore stinking up my water and it really does! My polys dont really come out for it during the daytime and my pearsei ends up eating it all. You guys have seen pics of her and she is thick! I dont need her to eat Massivore at all. Ive thrown some in at night but swear that pearsei finds them still in the dark. Will likely finish the Massivore off and get some Northfin carnivore instead.

I will work on pics after a good tank cleaning ths weekend.... no promise Polyaddict86 Polyaddict86 , just letting you know I have not forgot. lol

Its all good brother, no rush on the photos:),
This kind of an update helps me learn more about other people's polys, and how other people take care of their polys. Even when you talked about filtration like the difference about canister and other stuff, it gives use a good info and understanding on how it all works. So thank you for a nice update:)

I appreciate updates like these as well. I'm sure everyone does. Do you think they would be more active if you fed them the tilapia during the day and pellets at night? Also yeah, the smell of Massivore for one poly doesn't seem to be enough of a pro to keep doing it. The smell comments make me never want to buy it lol.

That's interesting about only the weeksii, teugelsi, and pearsi getting extra thick. Are they CB? What species are your other polys?

The weeksii is wild caught but the build of the fish is thick. The pearsei is cb but they are a very thick cichlid. The teugelsi is the only cb poly I currently have.

Here is my poly stock:
WC Dabola endli (Tinkisso river) x1
WC Koliba lap x 1
WC Faranah Guinea lap x1
WC Ansorgii x1
WC Weeksii x1
CB Teugelsi x1

So only six polys for me. Not a hardcore poly keeper that the rest of these guys. lol
I guess the fact the I keep the bigger polys and they are wild caught in a 300 gallon tank does put me in the 'hardcore' category.

Cleaned 3/4 of the tank super good. Need to pull out the large mopani and scrub it down. Still need to swap an FX5 for a new FX6 and then Im done with the hardcore cleaing for a while. Besides normal water changes each week I do end up doing a deep clean once a month where I pull out all the plastic plants and wood. I scrub them all down and gravel vac under where the wood sat..... (lol, I just said underwear). Hope to get poly pics later but they dont like the detailed cleaning and hide most of the day afterward.

Yeah, I gravel vac weekly also. Its more an issue to do the deep clean with the large pieces of wood. Junk just collects underneath and then the extra junk just fuels algae growth on the plastic plants.

Definitely hardcore. haha. Thanks for listing out the polys. Now I can look them all up!

That's awesome that you got around to doing a deep clean. Hard to find the motivation sometimes. What do you clean off your plants and driftwood with? What about your aquarium glass? Currently I'm just using a rag for the glass(might buy some DLS pads) and use shower brush/tooth brush for the plants and such. Do you ever do the water+ bleach soak for the plastic plants?

So a 'little' picture update. lol, 'little'

The fatty came out
