That Haitiensis is incredible, what do you feed him? Also, how big is your Grammodes? I love the blue he's developed.

Mix of different cichlid pellets. I've tried raw shrimp & veggies but most of the fish won't eat them. The grammy is about 8-9" and he gets the same mix of food + some of my own flesh and blood. That fish is downright MEAN.

I use a Canon 30D and used a 17-40 f/4L lens and the 580ex flash for these photos.

i have a nikon D40 but don't know much about DSLR's. is the 580ex flash an external one? it seems you can take much better pics with flashes on the side instead of in front of the tank

There are all kinds of tricks to use with flashes, just need to learn them. Anything from using a diffuser (which I didn't use for these), angling the flash to avoid reflections/flares, using multiple flashes or remote controlling a downfiring flash from the top of the tank. Check out Mojo's and other peoples' photos for more advanced flash/lighting technique. The photos in this thread were done quick and dirty :)

And yes, the 580ex is Canon's top external flash.

Dude your fish scare me-they look like the could kick some major butt!! Congrats on the Haiti-never been able to raise one-probably the only cichlid I have had die on me.

My first attempt with haitiensis ended up with me losing the entire batch. They can be pretty finicky when young. Second attempt, they were kept in a tank without other species, turned up the temp and fed less than normal. It was stress or overeating that did in the first batch, I suspect.

I even had a heater go crazy on me with the 2nd batch. Ended up hitting 94-96F for a day or two. Talk about energetic then! Didn't lose a single odo, but the bristlenose didn't make it :P

Beautiful fish!
Tell me the truth; did I see Titleist written across the Haiti & Midas’s heads? Fess up that’s not real is it? ;)

Awesome, u da man!
