Upgrade overflow,Sump, and Algae Scrubber

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nice set up. How would you clean the algae screen? Do you have to cut the zip ties every week? I used the velcro cable wraps on mine so I wouldn't have to constantly cut zip ties every time I clean my screen.

Well I have never cleaned them yet because I have no growth yet. And yes I guess I would have to cut the wraps off every time, But Velcro sounds like a good Idea. I may end up using that.... Thanks .... :)

Are you going to alternate cleaning the screens?

I'm not sure Egon.. Never had a Algae Scrubber so this is all new to me. I'll have to try it out and see if I clean them both at once or alternate. Good Question though. :)

This first pic shows 10 days with white led and no seeding. All that is being used are Led rope lights on the outer edges and leds
from rope lights mounted on plexi plates in the middle.

In the two center pics the led lights I made had some wire issues. Half the led plate lost it's lights. I figure I'd put it in the slot to see the difference.
Notice the closer and far left half in the pics don't have any algae growth on this side of the screen.

Last two pics of the top of the scrubber. These Pics are 10 days progress with white LEDs. Screen was not seeded.
Just some plastic with water running over it.

I did order one Hydroponic Led grow light to try and see what happens.

Real nice job!!! Has it lowered your nitrates?

It's a little to early to tell. My nitrates run around 40 to 50 ppm in a 220 gallon tank. This is the 17th day and I noticed the algae that is under the water is growing better than on the screen. I will keep an eye on it and see how the progress goes. I think I need to grow it thicker to see any difference in my readings.. :) I already know I need brighter lights... The Hydroponic Led grow light has not arrived yet.
