Too late to edit, thanks for your patience.

Is there much of a personality difference with the Severum types? Or are they pretty similar?

I don't think there is much of a personality difference with severums, though I am in no way an expert on them. I am intrigued because I was planning on putting a small group of Rotkeils in the 125 with the pollenis, but wasn't too sure if they were a bit too timid for the pollenis. If anything, I know they will grow at a faster rate than polleni and that may be the deciding factor in whether it works or not.

Another strategy that may work keeping cichlids with the polypterus, is to keep small mouthed species that are to large to be eaten by the poly.
Fish like festivums for example. They would need to be of a decent size but they are small mouthed.
Food items such as whole prawn could be offered to the polypterus. The festivums would not be able to take a whole prawn, therefore giving the poly plenty of time to get its meal.
I used prawns just as an example, but any large food items should work.
There are quite a few cichlids that this may work with.
Fully grown large angelfish may work. A group of thorichthys could also stand a chance.
I'm sure there are many more.
It's only a theory but it makes sense to me.

Well... magpie magpie your enthusiasm for Polleni reminded me of my enthusiasm for Polleni. Have never kept them but have been at the top of my want list. Ran into a few today at lfs thought of this thread and had to grab one. Also accidentally bought a vulture cat for different tank. Thanks.

Sweet! :)

I just stalked you to see if you'd started a polleni thread yet - please do so I can see how they do. (The vulture cat is beautiul BTW.)

How big are your polleni?

Reading more about the polleni on the forum, and someone said they had best success with them not only with fish that weren't black but those with different eating habits and therefore face/mouth shapes. So I think that a Heterospilus would be a good one for the list - since they are vegetarians they won't eat the poly food, and they will be more likely to not set off aggression with the Polleni.

Although I do read about people with Polleni and many different types of cichlids, (even with similar mouths) but I'm just trying to set myself up for success.

So far from the research I've done, I will most likely be adding 1 red jewel, 1 sajica, 1 rotkeil severum, and possibly a small group of Thorichthys pasiones with my polleni, but keep in mind, mine are all roughly 2.5" or so

Thanks really stoked Polleni and the Vulture. I just picked up one of the Polleni, was the biggest of the three there. It's tiny though, only about an inch and lost in a 55 gallon. I can usually find it if I search lol. As soon as I get get some decent pics I'll get a threat up.

Awesome! They are supposed to grow really slowly like the Hets. I'll be curious how yours grows with time.
