upgrading tank

i'm moving up to a 135gl tank, what i want to know is if i use my old filter do i still need to cycle the tank?
 
how big is your old filter (how much bio-media)
 
it's the biggest cascade hot filter it's rated for a 100gal and i hve no clue on he gpms
 
i would upgrade to some sort of sump or wet/dry if it was me!

Same about of fish going into the new tank as the old? No. You don't have to cycle it at all. Just move from one tank to the next.

On the other hand, I assume you're upgrading because your fish are growing. You might want to add another filter of some sort for the extra filtration as they get bigger.
 
No, I dont think you dont have to use the old water. You really just need to aclimate the fish to the new tank. The bacteria lies in the substrate, decor, filter media and walls of your tank. You will loose a lot of bacteria in the new tank and the cycle will have to start over again, but it wont take nearly as long and it wont be as bad of an ammonia or nitrite spike because you are using a cycled filter.. although its really not strong enough.

I would get another filter.. or 2. maybe 2 of those Penguin bio-wheel 350 filters? They are fairly cheap and and each is rated for tanks up to 75 gals. 2 of them would give you filtration for up to 150. Those, along with your current filter would do a great job.

The best bet is a sump filter, but that can get expensive.
