Upgrading to 180 gallon - transfer tips?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok the simplest way is to fill with new water and new substrate, treat water for chlorine, throw in the small bottle of Tetra safestart.

Now Just move the 406 over and run it. Put a heater on it. Put the 405 and rena xp on the 75g tank put a bottle of safestart in it and run it for 2 or 3 days in place of the 406. Then move the 405.

Go to the LFS and get a few cheap tetras and toss them in. If they make it and look good after a day start moving stock.

Another word of caution is, that you make sure you are also aerating the water. A tank that big will have a greater need for oxygen and agitation that canister filtration alone cannot provide

I'm not sure why people keep telling you to add old water from your cycled tank to seed the new one....old water is just full of nitrates and really no beneficial bacteria

The bb in your old filter should be fine to add to 180 along with the entire stock. You should also transfer the substrate and all the decor rom the 75 as well as they have bb on them also. Here's what I would do: Fill 180 to about 70% with new water; get the new water up to temp; transfer enough of the 75's water to top off the 180 and transfer all the decor and substrate because they have bb on them as well. The old water is not so much for introducing bb, but rather to have a little bit of ammonia to feed the existing bb from the filter, substrate and decor. Continue doing same water change routine that's been working for you, but keep a sharp eye on the water parameters. After a few weeks, your new filter medias should have established a bb colony, and at this point you can start removing any decor or the substrate you don't want in the 180.

Hmm i guess if you say it can with a tank of that size it would work, i used actually media from my 75 to cycle my 55, but i didnt put fish in right away just so i could make sure i dont get any spikes because i was keeping elephant nose fish in.

I moved fish from a 50 to a 180. I moved filter media ONLY. Never had a spike or anything. You are fine most likely.

Hm yeah good call on seeding the new filters with some of the media from the old 406, I'll do that.

Since the verdict seems to be split on using old water I think I'll stick with adding at least some of the old water to the new tank. It kind of makes sense to me since it seems the fish wouldn't be so shocked to be thrown in brand new water with brand new parameters all of a sudden.

I'll definitely add some aeration in the new tank, thanks, didn't even think about that! I'm not a big fan of air stones because of the noise the pump makes so maybe I'll look into spray bars and venturi valves.

IMO bottled bacteria is absolutely useless, hears an article on it, but not sure if it will show the link >>>> http://www.fishforums.net/index.php...al-starter-digging-out-the-info/#entry3654059

I actually had a good experience with using Safestart to start the 75 last year, it was a brand new tank setup that I stocked with a few cichlids from day 1 and they all seemed perfectly fine, no spikes in parameters or anything, it was kind of amazing as I've cycled a few tanks in my life, and it sucks lol.

O well thats good, it doesnt work all the time though, usually used for, if used correctly when theres large amounts of ammonia.

Old tank water just has excess nitrates in it, its similar to just buying a fish at the store if you acclimate them to the new water its ok.
