Hello,

i have recently fallen into bichirs, but im wondering what you guys use, if anything, for the upper level of the aquarium. i have a 90g, and the top looks... sad, without any fish swimming around. so far all ive heard is silver dollars or arrowana (sp) anything else, maybe some gourami? any thing, thanks alot :).

if ur in need of middle and upper dwellers for ur 90 gallon try ctenopoma Kingsleyae and ctenopoma acutirostre fpr the middle.and the african butterfly fish (pantadon buchholzi).

i'm happy with just the bichirs, nothing for middle or top. well in one of the tanks i do have two gars, but as people with gars know once they feel comfortable, they inhabit all levels of the tank and will stay on the bottom for long periods. one of mine actually spend 90% of the time on the bottom during the day.

you can try 2-5 bala sharks or tinfoil barbs. make sure they are big enough not to get eaten.

if you want something more colorfull or oddball... many members keep gars, dats, or knife fish. all of these will eventually outgrow a 90 gallon tank though.

ya, but the tank is 24" tall, seems that space could be utalized by something.
one of my tanks is 30" tall with only bichirs, but i see what you're saying :) if the space isn't used by something, that means i can have more bichirs (in terms of bioload) LOL

i don't pay attention to 'balancing' the tank, just stock them with what i like. i do like arowana, so if i were to get a top dwelling fish, it'd probably be an arowana. i think it'll outgrow your tank, but i suppose you can use it as a growout. don't get a jardini though, more often than not they turn aggressive as they grow.

knifefish are cool too, so you can look into those, but they aren't really top dwelling fish, and some can get aggressive or too large.

and as xrayz mentioned, gars are also possible tankmates, but they aren't strictly top dwelling. they would be cool if you don't mind that.

what kinds of bichirs are yours? that would also determine what you can keep with them

how big is your tank?

The african butterfly fish and ctenopomas are the only fish mentioned so far that won't out grow a 90g. I think those would be good additions to your tank. If you can find large rainbowfishes those might work also.

I think a Leopard Leaf Fish and an African Butterfly would be a great addition. Stick with an African theme. It's cool. Maybe even some Congo Tetras.
