I’ve had a breeding group of Benga Sunshine (Aulonolcara baeschni) for about 4 months now. They’ve breed just fine. The problem is they always stay in/just out of the rocks at all time. You guys know some smaller peacocks/haps that stick to the middle/upper water column? Or what can encourage my current fish to come out more? I have a 75 gallon. Thanks

I am thinking some Cyprichromis may help While from a different lake they are a great dither. I added a school to my calvus tank and the difference was immediate. Calvus are much more visible after the addition
Another thought may be labidochromis caeruleus. While they are mbuna they are extremely docile. You also wouldn’t have to worry about cross breeding with the sunshine’s. My labs and peacocks mix with no aggression.

Thanks. I’ve tried getting cyprichromis but they’re so expensive where I live. I would be willing to get rid of my group I have now I just really want a good active breeding group of something lol

Cyprichs are not cheap but they are fun fish. I just rounded out my school with 6 new additions last week from Dave’s Rare. They were $18 each plus shipping but well worth it. It is amazing how much different the calvus behavior is with them in the tank.

Thanks will consider. Heard many great things about Dave’s rare fish :)

I have a jacobfreibergi otter point in my main tank that I have never seen in the rocks. He is always swimming in the upper levels with the my red empress.
Not a great photo as I just snapped it with my phone but it is a good looking fish.

I've never had a peacock, hap or mbuna that stayed at any particular level of the tank. Even Synodontis multipunctatus.

I'm thinking you may need more fish rather than a fish for a particular level. How many fish do you have now? What is the gender ratio?

Placidochromis electra is a pretty small hap that has females that look different from and will not crossbreed with your baenschi.
