I mean I completely understand that it is a business but Id prefer if they made the fish more expensive maybe so it pays them back and they dont have to sell as many but thats jus my opinion. I just think there should be a way to fix this they are living animals not just experimental toys

Making fish expensive isn't going to solve anything, you think stupid people don't have money? That would only make others suffer and there still would be people trying to cram a Pacu into a 50g tank.

You can add on higher taxes into firearms but that doesn't mean there will be less accidental discharges.

I would report them for cruelty. Simple..

The women who bought them obviously doesn't care about their welfare so doesn't deserver to own fish.

Well, fish like Pacu and Bala Sharks shouldn't be sold at the big chain stores. Unknowing customers get told that they will do fine in a 30 gallon tank without realizing the size potential of these guys. Yet Bala Sharks are being sold as great community fish and Pacu are being sold as great tank mates for Oscars.

Im not saying that for ppl not to buy it but if a lfs could profit more from 1 fish sold they wouldnt have to try and sell as many so they would be able to make their rent etc while reducing the ammount of fish that are sent to their doom

Dude I can go into any fish store, tell them I have a 2,000 gallon pond, and walk out with whatever I want - even though I don't. I can also walk in there, and walk out with whatever I want without saying anything. The only place I've been asked tank size is Petsmart, cause it's policy. The only way they would be able to "verify" this would to go to your home and look.. They sell fish to make money, and assume that you know what your getting yourself into.

I know and thats the sad thing about it they assume

Heck, even the people running the store usually have no clue more often than not. If you really wanted to frustrate yourself, you should have confronted the person who made the sale about it. You would be pushing pins into your eyes by the end...

report to whom? Surely the police or animal services folks would have a good laugh if you call if you call to report animal cruelty on a pacu in a 20 gallon tank

We've all seen this and have stepped in with varying degrees of success. I would like to see the fish stores clearly write "recommended tank size" standards on their holding tanks. Example: Pacu $9.99 Recommended tank size 300g +

I have gone through the steps of a common fishkeeper: buy tank set up from Wally World, read the acompanying book, buy the coolest-looking/ biggest fish available and throw 'em in. You make some mistakes and find out the hard way how much improvision can be standed before your fish die/ tank goes to ****.
Anyway, when I was a newbee I did all things LFS people told me to do. Now I only go to the local shops because 1. they are more knowlegable, 2. Even though they aren't always the cheapest priced, they USUALLY have better quality fish and supplies, and 3. THEY CARE.

I also worked in my favorite LFS and even though it meant loosing commission, I would sometimes dissuade people from purchasing something that wasn't right for their tank/lifestyle. The fish no-no's are a given, but if someone came in to buy an iguana, for example, and didn't know anything about them, I would sell them a book first.
Bottom line, some LFS are wonderful, some not so great, but if you're gonna stay in the fish hobby you learn who's who. But let's face it, some people who buy the kind of things like pacus, oscars, and catfish and put them in a 30 gallon reguardless of a fair warning, probably won't be in the fish hobby for long. Some people just don't care.
