if your filter clogs wont your pump drain your tank?

That is a good point, But with proper maintenance It should not clog though. I dont go on long trips just a few work trips during the year for no longer than a week & my other half can watch it ya know. I dont think clogging will be an issue.

I considered this approach on my 150 with the sump I had but decided against it. If you do go for it, awesome! also I would consider an emergency overflow above your regular one just in case during those business trips!

Sorry way late response on this lol thanks man I probably should do that! Good thinking

Not if it is designed well. There should always be a bypass with filters like this so if the media does clog the tank/container/whatever doesn't overflow.

Yeah the stackable container where the media will be is going to be in a large tote where the plants and whatnot will be that's where the drain holes are going to be. If the media does clog it's just going to flow out of the stackable and in the tote and still back down into the tank

My only problem is I want sand and gravel rock for substrate and I was gonna hide the pump in a rock pile BUT the pump might be in danger with sand so still thinking of a way to keep it sand proof. I have geos also so they seem to carry sand up with them sometime and drop it back down so I'm In a pickle here

Any good idea on an inline pump to draw the water up that can dandle poo and whatnot? I wanna make my own intake from PVC to drop down in the tank gonna paint it black and make it look like a normal intake tube.

The way to make the "dump" filter overflow-proof is to drill more holes in the bottom of the container (so that if one or a couple somehow get plugged, water can drain through others).

Just hide the pump behind a piece of driftwood or a rock or whatever. The water return via gravity moves most of the gunk off of the bottom and into the filter...
