How do they suffocate though? when they're upside down? is that why he got himself back up?
Okay, it was a bad idea but I won't flame you for it.
Almost all turtles and tortoises can turn themselves back over but if a high dome tortoise like a desert tortoise ends up on it's back under the wrong circumstances and cannot reach the dirt with it's head they can die, this is not so much from positional suffocation but rather due to overheating from not being able to move into the shade.
If you flip over a softshell it will flip back over as fast as you flipped it in the first place, try it with a snapper and what you end up with is missing fingers.
