[urgent] Breeding experts, i need some quick info!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just noticed i have a big group of fry clinging to the base of the sponge filter....anyone know why?

Probably just feel safer being next to a structure

They are probibly feeding of the stuff growing on the filter or just hiding to feel safer. Meth blue is also hard on nitrifying bacteria, so caution should be used in a relativly unestablished tank with a sponge filter (a couple of drops will do) that's what caused the bacteria bloom. You can run some carbon on an HOB or do a few small water changes. Some Seachem stability will help once you get the water cleared up.

Woke up to major problems this morning. Being almost -40 with windchill here my fry tank went from 81degrees to 74degrees overnight! ...i dont know how they survived a 7degree drop but they are all alive and active.
QUOTE]

The 7 deg drop occurred slowly, that's why they're ok. Its the instant change in temp that shocks them. Throw a comforter or sleeping bag over the tank to help with the heat issue.

Thanks guys! when things like this arise it becomes very apparent that i have no idea what im doing haha.. slowly raised the fry temp by getting my main tank back to 81degrees, pulling 40% of the colder fry water out and running an air tube dripping the warmer water from the mother tank as to not shock them bringing the temp back up.

its at a solid 79 now..ill watch it more closely today....i want to feed them! but 90% of them are still hugging the bottom and all still have their egg sacks.

ok guys one more question! sorry i suck at this... the piranha frys egg sacks are just about gone so im cooking up my first batch of brine shrimp.

however i do not have THOUSANDS of fry to feed like most do..i have 100-200. is there anyway i can "store" the baby brines between feeding? since i will only be using a designated amount of shrimp at a time...

can i just toss them in a tupperware container with the water they were hatched in and scoop them out at my leisure? or can i toss them all in the fry tank and let the fish eat them at their leisure (or will the freshwater quickly kill them?)

i guess what im asking is, whats the shelf life for newborn brines.. could they survive a day or 2 posted up in a random container on the kitchen counter with no added maintenance?

UPDATE:

ran into a few problems. my nitrites were THROUGH THE ROOF this morning so i did a major water change.. its at .5 ppm now. im going to keep a closer eye on it from now on though.

anyway lost 25-30 in the past few days for unknown reasons other than being in the care of someone dealing with fry for the first time ever hahah... poor bastards.

PICS!!

Since your sponge is not cycled, you should be doing about 20% w/c daily. This should be a snap since you're only dealing with a 10gal tank.
