URGENT: Fish Dying

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I treated the new water with Prime. I used a thermometer to make sure the new water going into the tank was the same temp as the water in the tank. The pH of my tap water (used in all tanks) is the same. So no major temp or pH swings. I changed out 85% of water last night and will do again today. No markings or disfigurement of dead fish. I took out all new decor and put in some of the old hides from the previous tank. I know the shark will get too big for my 125, I didn't know that 12 years ago when I got him. I have looked at rehoming options but have found any one yet with a bigger tank for him even checked the local aquarium and they won't take him. I just upgraded to this tank, if the opportunity ever arised (I look for tanks almost daily) I'll get him something bigger. Thanks

My guess is contamination then my friend. Keep an eye on the rest of your fish and your water params.

With what a genocidal murderous cesspool this planet has become I truly hope divine intervention and miracles aren't wasted on trivial things like aquariums, terrariums, ans ant farms lol.

I'm thinking either the tank had a minicycle or an ammonia spike?

I did a slate background and slate decor in a 90g, I used almost 100 lbs of slate and 4 or 5 tubes of GE1, with a week cure time. I had no issues. Perhaps something bad could have leached out of your slate but I think that its unlikely. Depending on how much slate you put in it could have had an effect on the ph and hardness that was enough to kill your fish with the stress of the move maybe?

My fish need their daily dose of Jesus, not those kids in the 3rd world countries...they get enough.

My thought was the slate as the problem. GE1 is completely inert when its cured and after a week it would have been. I'm thinking maybe that slate had some type of chemical or sealant or something that leeched into the water...that or a minicycle is always a possibility as well.

How much and how often did you change the water in your old tank that you moved the fish from?

I'd just keep up with WCs then and see if switching the decor has helped. I've had some decorations in my original tank that've killed fish before. BTW, not much use rehoming the ID if it still fits in a 125 after 12 years, probably very stunted.

I moved the remaining living back to the old tank till I can figure it out...I don't know what it is, but I am miserable about the whole thing right now...

So I got a new 125 gallon tank. I decorated it with slate stones siliconed together with ge window, door silicone without the mold inhibitors. I let it cure for almost 2 weeks before adding it to the tank. I rinsed it all off in the shower before adding it to the tank. I added gravel (rinsed off) and some decorations. I filled it 2/3 fresh water and 1/3 water from current tank. I made sure the ph and temp of the new tank were as close as possible to the current tank. I transferred the filter directly from one tank to the new one. then I transferred the fish. after the first night(Sat night) the pictus cat died. day 2 by this evening 6+ platys are dead. I still have 8 cories, 2 loaches, 4 skirted tetras and one irredescent shark in the tank. I added activated carbon to the filter and prime. filter is good for 175 gallons. tested water 0 amonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate, pH is about 6.5, temp is 75 degrees, it has 2 air stones and a spray bar. I have no idea why they are dying...what should I do? I took out all the ornaments, everything except the gravel and did a 85% water change...I hope it works...

Have you lost any more fish? Sounds like something is poisoning your fish. Is the 125 brand new or bought used? Have you used these slate stones in the other tank before or are they newly acquired?
