Urgent help please.. 23" koi problem

This is very unfortunate and I'm sorry for your loss. As others have said this is all too common. I'm right by an inland pacific bay here in Costa Mesa and we have GIANT birds here frequently. I think nets and covers are ugly and take away a lot of the appeal of having a pond but there would be no other way to have one here.

There was a lady back in the 90's that I read about. She had a lot of property with a nice pond and stocked it with some high $$ koi. Then a bald eagle decided to eat her fish and not only would fish and game not do anything about the bird (she wanted it killed or removed.. funny I know.. national bird.) they also told her since it was a natural pond on the property she couldn't cover it because it was a natural food source for the eagle. She had to deal with losing thousands of dollars worth of fish!

That's horrible I feel her pain my fish wernt cheap either): koi that big are very valuable the ones I lost were the small ones too and they were thicker than my arms

You can actually put fishing line in a web and cover it that will hold off the birds and owl. That's what I did before we move

I understand, I was just talking about bald eagles. They considered trying to deprive the eagle of a natural food source an attempt to pursue and molest by forcing it to leave:

It is illegal to hunt, take, trap or remove Bald Eagles for any reason, according to the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. It is a Federal Law that was first passed to protect the birds in 1940, and then amended in 1962 to include the transport, sale, purchase, barter, possession, export, import, even the offer to sell, purchase, barter, transport, export, or import, a living or dead bird, nesting material, eggs, and/or chicks. The law goes on in great detail, to protect the Bald Eagle, eggs and chicks. It explains what the term "take" means in reference to this law, it relates to shooting, attempting to shoot, trap, pursue, poison, wound, kill, capture, collect, molest or even disturb Bald Eagles. The 1972 amendment increased the penalties for breaking this federal law. Plus rewards are provided for information leading to the arrest and conviction for those that violate this federal law.

Other birds are likely similar with the exception of in-season game birds legally killed.

i would just smash it with a rock at the point. its not looking too good

Just be glad you don't have an otter. It's a cat and mouse game with the otter and my father at his pond. It only eats the koi and there are plenty of other fish in the pond. Funny thing is he only eats the heads and then tosses them aside. My dad shoots at it with a pellet gun (I don't shoot at it so don't tell me how wrong it is) but I know he doesn't really want to hurt it cuz he would feel bad.

Yeah I'm sorry about your fish my man. You could probably put all the anti-predator pond gizmo's and crap out there and he'll still pick your fish off. Only thing that kinda worked for my pops was the motion activated sprinkler. But if you have a large pond that's a lot of sprinkler fire power you'd need.
