IN MY TANK
I require some advise on how to get my gar to eat pallets. I have the gar for about 1month now, he is about 12cms. When i first got him i feed him guppies. I have now starve him for the last 1and half weeks and he still will not eat hikari bio gold cichlid pallets/hake/ blood worms. I don't no what to do, should i get more guppies or should i wait until he takes the pallets. I don't want to lose this fish as it is very hard to get in South Africa. Thank you

Try frozen food (fish, shrimp, krill, etc). That is often a good in-between step when pellet training.

Since your fish is still very small, a steady diet is very important to ensure a healthy growth rate. Gars will inevitably learn to take what you give them, but sometimes you have to wait until they are larger. If it will not take frozen food then I suggest you go back to guppies for a while, just to be safe.

NO!!! at ur gars size he should have food 24/7. try to get him on prepared foods later, around 12 inches. ur starving a less than 5 in gar. U most likly have already caused stunting.

Thanks guys will be getting some guppies/feeder fish after work today. I have one more question , with a good supply of fish/shrimp how long will the fish take to get to 12inches(Estimate) Thanks agian

A few months if kept in the right conditions. Five months tops. This is based on my experience with juvenile gars -- others might disagree.

Both my gars i fed them feeders until i could get them on fish fillets, then stop feeders all together.. Like said above then work on pellets when they get bigger.

should take 5 to 8 montha depending on the volume of feeders.
And i still give feeders to my gar occassionally. keeps them active and more aggressive. Honostly when i gav emine live agian after not givin them for 3 or 4 months they didnt know what it was. they just lazily followd the feeders barely able to catch them. now they are super aggressive after feeders and much more accurate. IMO its good to give some occassionally

i got a 10 inch gar right now that i usually feed him smelt and shrimp. he doesnt not care about pellets so ive been starving him for about 1 week now too. he ate 1 pellet the other day, i drop it on his head and he doesnt really care about it. ive been trying carnivore and on some days i drop massivore. he is being very picky, all of my other fish munch out on the pellets.

^john is right here. if u want ur gar to eat pellets and such at his current size, the only safe way(hell IMO this is the only way to do it anyway) is to keep giving it feeders but at pellets and such as well. try to get them in the current so it looks alive as well. eventually it will eat
