I am starting a new tank. I bought established filter media from LFS. I bought a canister filter. Late at night started doing everything like putting inside rocks and driftwood and filled the tank and added Prime to detoxify water.

Problem happened when I couldn't install the canister filter. LFS is closed and I have the filter media with me which I can't return. So,I just put filter media inside my tank. Is it ok?

Will the beneficial bacteria stay alive? Will they stay intact in my tank water or they would die when they are outside the filter? I am not trolling, just I am unsure if the filter media will stay good just like that inside tank for like a day ot two until I get another filter.

Please reply. Thanks.

Do you have a HOB filter? If not would do what Jacob1320 Jacob1320 suggested. Also like to add the bacteria will need food.

If you can run air store under the media or get some current thru it.

Thanks dear. I don't have anything to provide current or movement to it. Beneficial bacteria will die in the absence of water movement to media?

No oxygen for bacteria. A small powerhead will be sufficient.

Thanks a lot. Water is not totally stagnant. The tank has two power internal filters installed but I am not sure how their mechanism works. I don't know if the water circulates through media properly or not. This filter pulls water and send to top of tank where it travels through a pipe and pipe has some holes and below these holes their is space made to place filter media. I am not sure if the water circulates through this media or just drops of water poors from the pipe to the media and stays there only. Below is the current situation of tank.

I didn't put any food inside because I ll do something to fix this and place filter media to a proper place. Even for 24 hours bacterias can't thrive without a food source?
