yeah, just try to have two gold fish in your 20g with a good filter. I prefer Aqua Clear, and has worked well for my tank. Remeber that common gold fish are dirty eaters, and excrete a lot of waste. You didn't mention the type of filter you had before, and if your filter was underperforming, it may have led to the ammonia spike as well.
Don't give up. I have in my experience killed alot of fish than i ever wanted to, and the worst experience i had was accidentally boiling my whole tank cause i set my heater on too high. Its a learning thing.
 
i never encourage people to use chemicals to get rid of algae, it seems they always have a detrimental effect on the fish, either killing the fish or making them ill. Correct stocking, elbow grease and pwc should be enough to help keep algae at bay on a cycled tank.
