URGENT - Need help on my arowana

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
UPDATE: He is did not eat for around 7 days and ate normally last night. He hit his head in the aquarium when I was trying to get him in the bag (for transfer from hospital tank to main tank) and had a seizure, was able to transfer him afterwards. After 3 hours, he's not breathing normally and went upside down a couple of times. When fish did not respond properly and sank, he was transferred immediately so hospital tank, main tank may need to be disassembled due to the outbreak (darn tank is so hard to disassemble). I suspect the difficulty in breathing was caused by the water plus the hard impact earlier may have caused arowana to be weakened. He almost died last night by drowning (yes, a fish could actually drown - watch his gills)

Important: This may save an arowana's life, if you are able to pinpoint that the problem is the water and the fish's gill is not breathing properly (probably twice in a minute), if he turns over and is dying, the fish can be saved but you need to do this in less than 10 mins so there may be still be a good chance of normal recovery. Immediately transfer to another tank with new water (parameters set - chemically if on time constraint), hold the fish upright near the air bubbles from the pump and tank should have sufficient water current. Fish should return to breathing normally within 10to15mins if permanent damage has not yet been caused - if after 10 mins fish condition does not improve, massage gills slightly. (useful for problems caused by contaminated water) BUT FISH SHOULD NOT REACH THIS STAGE BEFORE YOU TAKE ACTION ü

He is now swimming happily but has injured gills (difficulty in swallowing too), hence, additional 2-3 days tetracycline treatment shall be administered. He will have to hold out on my 20 gal tank for now until the 75 gal tank can be completely sterilized, may take a week at most two though. Many thanks for everyone who helped me, especially headbanger.ü
