Salt addition only replaces some minerals that are lost from RO water, or water that hasn't been changed in a while. IMO, new and fresh water has all the minerals that is needed and there should already be plenty of new water in the tank. Water changes help replace lost minerals. Any more, and you are starting to venture into curing parasites and then brackish/marine water.

Good points. I think adding a teaspoon to a 54 gallon is a safe compromise, but I couldnt argue for it as a necessity. It does seem to have some benefits most which seem to be present at very low concentration levels.

On a side note, the tester fish got eaten. He ignored him for hours, but when I turned the lights out and went to walk my dog, well he hasnt been seen since.

Other than the Nitrite thing and ick treatment "Aquarium Salt" is a type of Snake Oil in my book that has "mystical" powers and give a placebo for the fish keeper. Of course that's IMHO, a mere bit of Prime or Melafix is better than "Salt" for freshwater fish

Salt can also help with treating or preventing infections in wounds. It has its place for sure

I think the reason a lot of people swear by it is that it stimulates fish to produce a thicker slime coat which can help to protect them in the short term.

I am not a flowerhorn guy at all but he does look like a nice healthy fish I think you will be fine :)

Morning update - so far so good. He's doing great, but he didnt eat the tester fish after all, I have no idea where it keeps hiding. He is kind of hypnotized by the powerhead , he just keeps staring at it only taking a break do do a flip or two then he's back to the jet stream. He seems to be enjoying it.

My opinion is salt doesn't have a place in freshwater. I've delt with infections, parasites, ick, velvet, all without salt. Salt is for my brackish (now at 1.023, almost full marine) and my marine tank. The best thing for fighting/preventing disease is water changes. Do them religiously and you'll never think about salt again.

I am definitely headed in this direction. I didnt like salt because it kills snails and plants and I like to use my tank water for my outdoor plants.
