Sorry for posting in here dont know where else ill get responses asap! One of my smaller fish in my 55gallon has ich... can I help to fight the ich by putting salt in that I use for my Saltwater tank??? Ive heard "use Aquarium salt" but im not sure if "Aquarium salt" is the same salt I use to put into my salt water tank..... if so how much do I put into my 55 gallon tank? Thanks in advance for the quick responses :(

82F and AQUARIUM salt, directions will be on the back of package....buy full strength ick medication...

I threw out the box my salt water salt came with, is that aquarium salt?? how much would you suggest for a 55 gallon... its not horrible ich, just like 10 white dots on my smaller red devil, just want to take precautions so it doesnt spread to my other fish aka the 12'' R Devil and 8'' FHorn

I just added "NOX-ICH" into my tank, used alittle less than the dosage recommended per gallon so I dont over-do it... thanks for help.

It will say aquarium salt. Slt-water salt is not aquarium salt.
Take a deep breath and calm down. Raise the temp to 82+ for tonight and buy meds tomorrow. There are stickies in the health/disease section about ick.....

Definitely do not use salt mix for saltwater tanks. This mix has buffers and additives that will raise Ph and probably kill your freshwater fish. I would recommend a seperate smaller treatment tank but if not I would use Formalin or Freshwater Coppersafe because they do not turn the water blue and stain your silicone inside the tank. You also need to check your water conditions in your tank such as ammonia, ph, nitrite. Ich is very common infection and not usually fatal on hardy fish such as cichlids if caught early and treated. The cause more times than not is stressed fish due to poor water quality or other fish harrassing them. Good luck.

HAHA ROB SAID CALM DOWN. didnt you ever hear that when someones not calm telling them to calm down just makes them more out of control..well atleast it does to me :nilly:. charles do what he said and everything will be okay

ich medication is CRAP... dont fall for it. Its totally unesessary IMHO> You can easily treat Ich with the Heat/Salt therapy and dont have to resort to medications that can ting your water blue or dye your silicone blue. Not to mention, you'll probably go through an entire bottle of the crap. But it doesnt say that on there. They dont tell you the life cycle of the ich parasite is longer than the recomended treatment on the bottle..

But i digress.

Just raise the temp slowly to 82 (a degree every few hours)

Add Aquarium salt at 1 Tbsp/5 gallons of water. NOT SALTWATER TANK SALT.
Its at the petstore and its called "aquarium salt"

Do that for no less than 14 days. That is the life cycle of the Ich parasite. You need to treat for an entire 14 days or your fish could be reinfected.

During that time. Keep the temp up - this will speed the life cylce of the parasite along
and keep the salt in the tank....

SOOO

when you do water changes - which you should still be doing at least once a week. 50-75% water changes are best.
Make sure that when you are adding the clean water, you replenish the salt, but ONLY as much as you took out.
So if you took out 25 gallons of water from the water change. Only put in 5 Tbsp of salt back to the tank.

Your fish will be ich free.
Remember, the ich will go away, you wont see it, but dont stop treatment until 14 days have passed.

What ich medication are you using? (or not using) Mardel is making great ich products that are far more effective and fast than simply raising the temperature and adding some salt. Melafix/pimafix, crap, but they are not for ich. To each his own though....:) If my fish are ever sick, I use them in combination. Temp, salt, meds...
A 75% water change is not good for obvious reasons...30-50% is the best ime/o. Do w/c's every other day for 2 weeks.
You should be using a quarantine tank...
As stated above, don't stop using the meds/temp/salt for 2 weeks! The ich will just come back...
