every night or almost every night my oscar will go completely limp pretty much. he floats around on the top of the tank sideways or angling sideways. either floats on the top or sits perfectly still on the bottom moving nothing but his gills. i am worried on what is wrong and he only does this at night, he is perfectly fine during the day but almost every night he does this. if anyone can help me please let me know why he does this, what would cause this, and how to prevent this.

I think he is just being moody. Oscars tend to do that sometimes. If I move something in mine's tank he will sit there for a while and not do anything just like you describe.

Its either being moody. Or have you checked your water params ? could be ammonia affecting him..

do more water changes

mine did this for like 2 weeks when i first put him in the tank, thought he was gonna die, then one day BAM he kills the other oscar in the tank and hasnt acted like that since

the only other fish that he is competing with would be the 11" pacu. i also have gold fish, big goldfish but i am on the verge of ridding of them and he will have no other compitition.

Goldfish ? Id say check your ammonia... What size tank is this again ?

it is small for the fish i have but ive had the fish for a week and haven't had the time to buy a bigger tank. back to your question i have a 55 gallon tank if i can't find a home for the goldfish by tomorrow i am taking them to petco when i go to get food for the oscar

Checking you water parameters is always the first thing to do whenever anything seems slightly off, but I have to ask you... When you say its only at night, is it only when it's dark? Fish do 'sleep'. My discus prop themselves up against something and just go to sleep. In the morning it takes them a few minutes to come around once the lights are on. Does he have a place of his own to do this? That may explain the floating around. But, definitely check the water parameters. GL

If it was ammonia there would be more issues.

Are the lights off when this is happening? He could be sleeping...
