If it was ammonia there would be more issues.

Are the lights off when this is happening? He could be sleeping...
Umm.. Did you read the first post. To me it sounded like he was having issues :screwy: Oscars dont do that for no reason usually its mild stress but the way he describes it is abnormal and ive owned and raised Oscars of all sizes..

Do you know the symptoms of ammonia poisoning? As I said, and another member also, he's probably sleeping.

Edit: Did you read my post? I said there would be more issues.

I read your post. Ive kept fish for many years and I am well aware of ammonia poisoning. I am also aware that Oscars get moody and do these things occasionally. I did not draw a conclusion that it was ammonia poisoning I simply brought it up as a possibility. I don't know whats going on with his tank any more than you do. But to me it just would seem that ammonia or other water parameters are making him unhappy. Given that the OP did not post any water parameters when a fish acts strange its a good idea to test your water.... Oh ! And another member mentioned that as well :ROFL:

its possible but i cannot set anything up, i don't have any way of getting a save yet good looking shelter in there. i just tore out the old shelter because he was doing this nad hid in the and freaked out and messed himself up pretty bad.

I agree with the majority above - he's probably just sleeping. Now having said that, do check your water parameters and see whats up there.

If all looks fine then I'd say he's just being a typical O. Mine do this all the time. Just lie about at the bottom - first time I saw it I thought they were dying as well. But once they "woke up" they were fine.

Personally if it was something really serious I'd think that the O would be acting this way all the time, not just from time to time..

If it was ammonia the fish would most likely be dying, getting burned, and rapidly breathing and not moving much throughout the day. I really wouldn't consider it a possibility at this point. In fact, I wouldn't consider water parameters a possibility at this point because it only happens at night. However it's always a good idea just to check anyways.

I guess that's nice that another member mentioned that. Do you want a sticker under your name for today?

Ok well , since you went out of your way to contradict me. Lets take a look at what he told us and how limited the information was when I said check for ammonia.

every night or almost every night my oscar will go completely limp pretty much. he floats around on the top of the tank sideways or angling sideways. either floats on the top or sits perfectly still on the bottom moving nothing but his gills. i am worried on what is wrong and he only does this at night, he is perfectly fine during the day but almost every night he does this. if anyone can help me please let me know why he does this, what would cause this, and how to prevent this.
Why not check for ammonia I simply suggested it. :screwy: At any sign of fish stress (or perceived fish stress from a sleeping oscar) It is never a bad idea to do an ammonia test.

Now knowing what we do I would say goldfish an Oscar and a pacu (I realize this is temporary) could cause quite the bio load. Another reason to check for ammonia. You get where i am going with this ? The leading cause of fish death is from over feeding which causes ammonia and kills fish. When you think your fish are acting odd or better yet once a week run an ammonia nitrite nitrate test.

PS the whole "well somebody else said it" comment was a page out of your book so hang on to your gold stars

I'm not saying not to check it. I'm saying it's highly unlikely. And the fact that it only happens at night, and other fish show no symptoms is another big indicator that water quality is not an issue. Another big indicator is that it sounds like the oscar has been doing this for a while. I would say 2 or 3 weeks. Enough to clear up ammonia, or kill the fish.

Overfeeding itself does not cause ammonia.

You took my comment that "someone else mentioned it" the wrong way. I was simply stating that another member mentioned it to give them some credits. I do this often, don't get offended.

tomorrow i will check all these just to be safe, along with get rid of the goldfish and try to find a safe shelter for the oscar that also looks good.
