Saw the picture thread... now I am confused.

Which is what and what is the difference lol.

And the fish listed as "red terrors" at chain petstores (petsmart or petco)... what are they?

And are the super colorful ones (bright bright red or orange) males or females?

:confused::confused::confused:

Crappy,dull, easy to get fish are usualy the "False" RTs. The correct name is Uro. These fish are found in abundance at every 5 and dime and being advertised as Red Terrors. The bright colored ones are female Festaes, or True Red Terrors and are extremely harder to find. You wont usualy find a "True" Red Terror at any chain type pet store but normaly in a privately owned pet store that were special ordered in or brought in by a private breeder. I had invested in a six hour round trip and months of looking to find my first ones and a seven and a half hour round trip for the others I picked up. If you want some immediately your best bet is to purchase online and pay the expensive shipping costs. Thats my route next time around.

Are the tempraments the same? Get the same max size? "Uro" doesn't yield much in ol' google, what is their real name?

So..

Uro = false red terror, colors are duller, and are common

Festae= true red terror, intense colors, hard to fined

I was trying to look up picture differences, guess I could go look at that other thread.

Uro - Nandopsis uropthalmus
also called the "Mayan cichlid" or false red terror

Red Terror - Amphilophus festae
true red terror

I don't want one lol. I just want to know the difference.

Don't have a big enough tank for a real RT... curious if the fake ones get the same size and are as aggressive.

EDIT: posted at the same time... thanks cichlid addict

never owned a true festae but have owned a couple uro's and they can be very nasty.
